Ithaca, NY Area Manager:
The Coalition for Healthy School Food is seeking a part-time Manager for our programs in Ithaca and the surrounding areas, up to 20 hours per week (hours may vary each week). Due to the nature of our programs, a flexible schedule is required during school and after school hours. Generally, work hours would be from about 9 am – 1 pm, however, there may be times that the manager would need to be available during after school program hours (2 – 4 pm-ish) or earlier than 9 am (this can be flexible, if needed, to accommodate another part time job). There may also be evening or weekend work on rare occasions, which would be scheduled well ahead of time. The majority of work hours will be spent in local and regional schools. The job involves planning which can be done remotely, with some in person meetings in our Ithaca office. This is not a fully remote position.
The Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that promotes plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools, to teach the whole school community about the effect of our food choices on health, the environment, equity, and other social justice issues.
Our programs include:
- Cafeteria food tastings
- Recipe specific curriculum in classrooms
- Overseeing cooking instructors and cooking classes
- Adult education
The qualified candidate will run these programs in the schools with the help of volunteers.
Job Duties:
- Communicating with principals and teachers, to set up programming in schools
- Running the programs (see list of programs above) which includes obtaining the supplies and bringing them to the schools (for example, printing, shopping for food, sample cups, etc.)
- Recruiting volunteers to help with programming
- Fundraising (it’s okay if you don’t have prior experience on this)
- Marketing (providing us with a social media post each week about the programming we are doing, getting our programs into local media)
- Maintain records of programs provided, numbers of students or adults reached, any significant stories/feedback as a result of our work
- Access to a car is needed, for example the candidate may need to purchase food or other supplies, go to the office to pick up supplies, and then go to a school to deliver a program, and then go back to the office to return materials
- The ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs is needed for carrying supplies in and out of schools, which can involve stairs
Skills:
- Management experience
- Be knowledgeable about plant-based nutrition
- Have good organizational skills
- Functional use of Google Drive and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) basics (if you don’t know these, they are easy to learn)
- Attention to detail and food safety
- Ability to juggle multiple projects is a must
The ideal candidate follows a plant-based diet, and those who do will be given preference.
Planning work can be done remotely from your home or from our office, and you will be spending the majority of time in schools. In the early weeks of starting the job, we will work together in the office.
